SURVEY: Majority of fans will watch Qatar World Cup but interest is low

A survey carried out by the Killarney Advertiser has found that the majority of local football fans will still watch the World Cup in Qatar, despite widespread concerns around human rights abuses in the small Middle Eastern country.
Around 79% of respondents say they will be following the tournament, which gets underway on Sunday with the opening match between the host nation and Ecuador.
However, our poll also suggests that that percentage would be significantly higher if the World Cup was being held elsewhere. Over 93% of those surveyed indicated that they normally watch the showpiece football event when it rolls around every four years.
General interest appears to be relatively low, even amongst those who say they will be viewing the games on TV. When asked to rate their interest levels in the upcoming tournament on a scale of 1-10, the average score was just 5.5.
When prompted to explain their lack of interest, those polled cited human rights issues in Qatar, FIFA corruption, and the timing of the tournament.
The 2022 World Cup – the first winter edition of the games - will run for four weeks. The final will take place in the Lusail Stadium on Sunday, December 18.
