There's €1,000 store credit to furnish a room of your choice up for grabs - and it's all part of the launch of a new website today (Friday).

In response to the demand for a better online presence during the pandemic Moriarty's of Killorglin decided to get to work and build their very first website.

And after a false start and a lot of research, web design company Avalanche was chosen and the result can be found on www.moriartysofkillorglin.ie.

"Over the last two years living with COVID has been an extreme challenge for customers and business owners alike," Claire Caulfield, Sales and Administration Manager, told the Killarney Advertiser.

"It really was a story like none other, a story of uncertainty, most businesses had to get creative and adapt their way of doing business over this period in order to survive and keep going. It [a website] was something that we hadn’t overly considered as people could always visit us, we quickly realised that we had to adapt to these strange times and from there our website journey began."

And Claire added that they couldn’t recommend Avalanche enough.

"Aidan made the process so simple and less daunting than we first thought. Aidan and his team couldn’t have been more helpful, any idea we had they put on the site that day. We have never been so grateful to all our customers over the last two years for the support they have shown us, without this the chances are like a lot of businesses over COVID, we would have had to close our doors. We really do now understand the meaning of 'Shop Local'."

And in light of launching the new site they would like to give someone very special a little gift.

"COVID is hopefully finally coming to an end but with this has left its mark on many people’s lives, leaving behind heartache, job losses and the rising cost of living. We would like to give €1,000 store credit to furnish a room of their choice. All you have to do is go to our website, click on the dedicated link and nominate someone close to you that truly deserves it and leave us a little message as to why you have chosen this person; it can be anyone from a child, parent, grandparent or healthcare worker - you decide!

"Again, we would like to thank all our customers from far and wide and Aidan and his team at Avalanche because without these people none of this would be possible. Strength and growth come only through effort and support."

Newly released book documents Civil War politics in Kerry

Kerry historian Owen O’Shea has released a new book detailing Civil War politics in the county and charting the turbulent and sometimes violent elections of the 1920s and early 1930s.

From Bullets to Ballots: Politics and Electioneering in Post-Civil War Kerry, 1923-33 has been published this week by UCD Press and will be launched at events in Tralee during the coming weeks.

Owen’s book is based on four years of research for a PhD at the School of History at University College Dublin.

Owen describes the Civil war in Kerry as the most divisive and longer lasting than any other county in Ireland.

He said: “Politics and election campaigns in the county were hugely influenced by the bitterness and hatred which the war created.

Elections brought underlying tensions to the surface and were often occasions of violence fuelled by fiery rhetoric from election platforms.”

In the book, the results of elections for the Civil War parties, as well as other parties who were not defined by the Treaty split, are considered in detail.

Key influences on electoral behaviour are examined, including party organisation, the role of party members, the dynamics of election campaigns, how the memory of the Civil War was used to persuade voters, and the crucial role of newspapers and their coverage of elections.

The book was launched by Professor Ferriter in Dublin bookshop Books Upstairs, on Tuesday.

There will be a Kerry launch on November 28 at O’Mahony’s Bookshop in Tralee with Minister Norma Foley as guest speaker.
