Rathmore and Kilcummin set for fiercely contested East Kerry final

O’Donoghue Cup Final
Rathmore v Kilcummin
Sunday 2pm
Fitzgerald Stadium
Senior side Rathmore are favourites heading into Sunday’s East Kerry final but they will be pushed all the way by a Kilcummin outfit who are desperate to bridge a 51-year gap to their last triumph in this prestigious competition.
Kilcummin reigned supreme in East Kerry in 1973 and it is remarkable that they haven’t yet secured title number two considering how strong they have been at various points in time in their recent history.
Of course, Dr Crokes’ dominance has been a major factor. They have won 34 titles, 24 more than their nearest rivals Spa. With the Lewis Road club no longer in contention after being accounted for by Kilcummin in the semi-final, the 2024 decider is surely one of the most intriguing finals in years.
Kilcummin will be looking to the experienced Brendan Kealy and Kevin Gorman for leadership on the day, with captain Seán O’Leary also likely to play a key role.
For Rathmore, Kerry stars Paul Murphy and Shane Ryan will naturally be central to their plans, with the ever-dangerous John Moynihan capable of pulling off the unexpected whenever he gets the ball close to goal.
On paper Rathmore appear to have the more potent attack but with the conditions expected to be cold and wintry, it may not be a day for forwards.
It is sure to be a physical and keenly contested final and it is hoped that a healthy crowd will be in attendance on the day.
