Litter bins used to dump household waste

By Sean Moriarty
People are using town centre litter bins to dispose of household rubbish it has been claimed.
Cllr Niall Kelleher, who is also the president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, raised concerns about the number of bins in Killarney town centre.
He is unhappy following a survey by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) which shows that Killarney is clean to European standards but dropped from second in the national chart to 22nd.
The results of the survey were released last month and Mr Kelleher raised the matter at last week’s Killarney Municipal meeting.
“People are disposing household litter in the town centre,” he told the meeting.
There are currently 47 public litter bins located within the Killarney Town Centre according to Kerry County Council officials. In 2019, when the bins were last surveyed, there were 43 public litter bins.
