Donie Courtney honoured at annual West End House showcase

West End House hosted the third annual Donie Courtney memorial showcase last week. The event was attended by Donie's wife Adeline O’Brien and his niece Jessica Courtney Leen, who is the Creative Director of West End House. Jessica recently announced her departure from the role after three years. Students from teen and adult acting classes took to the stage with excerpts from plays they have been working on for the past ten-week term. These included monologues and scenes from Donie Courtney's own Youth Theatre play. Jessica delivered a fond farewell message to everyone in attendance on the night sharing the importance of the showcase and what it represents. She said that Donie loved showcases, so they named it in his honour. She added: "The tutors at West End House are the backbone of what we do and who we are, but it is the students that are the heart of it. I'm so proud of every single person who comes through these doors to bravely take on a new creative challenge, whether for a dream or hobby or whatever else.”

Kerry TD Pa Daly has welcomed confirmation from the HSE that the new Minor Injuries Unit for Killarney will open early next year.

The facility, which will be located at St Columbanus Home, is expected to ease pressure on University Hospital Kerry by treating non-emergency cases locally.
Deputy Daly said the development is “positive news for patients and families” and will help reduce overcrowding in the Emergency Department.
He added that while the Killarney unit is an important step, there is now a strong case for a similar service in North Kerry. He highlighted that 60% of A&E attendances at UHK come from West Kerry, North Kerry and Castleisland, and said long travel distances remain an issue for many patients.
Deputy Daly also pointed to ongoing problems with out-of-hours GP cover in the Listowel area and said he will raise the need for an additional unit directly with the HSE and the Minister for Health.
