Final preparations ahead of European Golf Championship

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is entering the final stretch of preparations as it gets set to host the European Amateur Team Championship from July 8–12 on its Killeen Course.
The championship returns to Killarney exactly 50 years after it was first held at the venue in 1975.
Sixteen national teams from across Europe will compete, with each team made up of six of the continent’s top amateur golfers.
This is the second time the championship has been held in Killarney, and the first time it has been staged in Ireland since 1997, when it was hosted at Portmarnock.
Ireland last won the event in 2008 and will be looking to use home advantage to challenge again this year.
Head Greenkeeper Enda Murphy added that the course has been fine-tuned to deliver true championship conditions, with particular focus on green speed, definition, and overall presentation.
The championship format includes two rounds of stroke play, followed by three rounds of match play to determine the winners. Past participants in the event include Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.
Head Greenkeeper, Enda Murphy, said: ‘Preparing the Killeen Course for the European Amateur Team Championship has been both an exciting and, at times, a demanding process. Our goal has been to elevate every aspect of the course to true championship standard from the speed and consistency of the greens to the definition of all areas on the course. We’ve invested a lot of time and effort to ensure that the course not only looks pristine but plays to the highest competitive expectations. We are proud of the results and can’t wait to see Europe’s best amateur players take on the course for this elite competition.’
The event will bring hundreds of visitors to the town and is expected to generate a strong boost for local tourism.
