Donaghy and Gooch say ‘no’ to Fine Gael
F
Former Kerry All-Star Kieran Donaghy has become the second footballer to turn down the advances of Fine Gael in the past number of months.
Donaghy, who recently announced his retirement from intercounty football, was reportedly approached by FG officials about the possibility of joining Junior Minister Brendan Griffin on the party’s ticket for the next general election. The Austin Stacks big man has reportedly declined the offer in order to focus on his business interests.
Donaghy’s good friend and former teammate Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper was also on the radar earlier this year but it is believed that the man many call the greatest footballer of all time is not interested in a career in politics either.
If either did choose to run, they wouldn’t be the first Kerry footballer to join forces with Fine Gael: Jimmy Deenihan represented the party in Dáil Éireann between 1987 and 2011.
With Gooch and Donaghy out of the picture, Fine Gael’s search for a high profile candidate continues.
