The current N22 between Farranfore and Killarney presents significant safety and capacity issues, especially due to limited active travel options for cyclists and pedestrians.

With increasing traffic and rising demand for safe, sustainable travel, the proposed upgrades are crucial for Killarney town.
The new plans will incorporate ‘Core Active Travel’ routes (marked in green), adding dedicated paths and safer lanes for cyclists and pedestrians. Existing routes (in orange) and planned Kerry County Council Active Travel projects (in red) are also integrated into the design to create a seamless, accessible network for non-motorised transport.
The upgrades may even include additional neighbourhood schemes to ensure better local connectivity.
This enhanced infrastructure is expected to ease congestion, improve road safety, and support Killarney’s tourism industry by offering a more user-friendly and sustainable travel environment for visitors and locals alike.
