There was great excitement in Two Mile CNS earlier this week as pupils and teachers tuned in to the Science Foundation Ireland, Curious Minds Awards ceremony. After six years of Gold Awards for Science, the pupils in Two Mile decided to aim higher for the Platinum Award. The excitement was even more real when Two Mile found out it was the only school in Kerry to achieve the Platinum Award this year and that they were one of only 30 schools in Ireland!

The Platinum award is a school-wide development project focusing on raising awareness of STEM and how taking part has improved the school community. The children studied the theme of healthy eating and the science behind it, including how food is grown and the effects of different foods on our bodies.

‘The importance of STEM to children cannot be overstated’ said Catherine Barry, Principal of Two Mile CNS. ‘Through Science we can teach critical thinking skills, build resilience and encourage creativity and ingenuity. Most importantly, it is fun and children in all classes enjoy engaging in the learning activities’

The Parents of Two Mile are very supportive of Two Mile School Plan or Science. ‘The earlier that kids engage with STEM subjects in a fun way the better’ said Cliff Fee, parent’s nominee on the Board of Management ‘This will give them the foundation that they need for choosing subjects at second level, creating a pathway to achieving their goals in the future."
