A Beaufort school this week launched a major fundraising campaign - with a target of €100,000 - to build a specialised playground for children with special needs.
St Francis Special School, one of Kerry’s longest-serving special needs facilities, plans to build the playground for its 50 student school and those behind the project are appealing to businesses and the wider community in Killarney and surrounds to help fund the development.
The playground will include a custom wheelchair swing, roundabout, wheelchair seesaw, sensory house, and wheelchair accessible sand table and the school is appealing for corporate donations, private donations or in lieu of monies – building materials, contractors and trades, skilled and non-skilled labour, design or building expertise or people’s time to assist with fundraising.
“In building the school around the needs of the student where socialisation, fun and play are hugely important parts of the experience, it is now time to expand and develop this part of the school's offering,” principal Liam Twomey said.
The mission of the school is to enable, encourage and enrich the lives of its 50 children who attend each day with a range of moderate to high/profound needs, he added.
