Council makes history in Killarney
K
KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL entered the history books in Killarney today when its December or Christmas meeting unfolded in Killarney House & Gardens, the first time a council meeting has taken place there.
The meeting was held at the request of Kerry mayor Councillor John Sheahan as it is his home area.
Among the business carried out at the monthly meeting of the local authority was the signing of a memorandum of understanding with West Springfield, Massachusetts.
Mayor Sheahan and his counterpart, West Springfield’s first citizen, Chris Reichelt, signed the document to establish a Sister City relationship between West Springfield and Dingle/Daingean Uí Chúis.
Mayor Reichelt has been leading a nine-person delegation to Kerry over the weekend including political, civic and business leaders from his city. West Springfield has had a strong relationship with Dingle and west Kerry, not least because many natives of the Blasket Islands settled in the Massachusetts city (pop. 29,000) when they emigrated from Corca Dhuibhne.
