U13 soccer team do Killarney proud in Belfast

A youth team from Killarney Athletic were the only Kerry-based squad to compete in the Belfast Youth Cup last week.
The U13 arm of the club were one of a very small amount of clubs from outside of Northern Ireland to participate in the invitation only tournament.
This Killarney Athletic team is worth watching – previously they won the U11 competition in the Dublin School Boys Cup, the first team from outside Dublin to win it.
Killarney Athletic team were invited to last year’s Belfast Youth Cup but the event was cancelled.
Instead they took up the invitation this year and while results did not go their way, club chairperson Ger Nagle said "It was a massive experience for them and the made lifelong memories".
The Belfast Youth Cup is usually open to British and European teams too but the organisers were unable to invite them due to the ongoing uncertainty with international travel regulations.
The tournament was held at the Ulster University Jordanstown between August 9 to 11.
On the opening day of the competition they played four matches against some of Northern Ireland’s best schoolboy football teams including Dungannon, Rosario, Ballymena, Linfield, Ballinmallard and Warrenpoint Town FC.
Unfortunately their number one goalkeeper Ewan McCrohan got injured in the opening match against Dungannon and they were on the backfoot for the rest of the tournament.
“Fionn Sheehan went between the posts for Ewan the rest of the first day but he too got injured in the last game so JJ O’Donoghue stepped up and made a few great saves, but Ewan was back in action for the second day,” said Ger.
They eventually qualified for the fifth and sixth play of the final loosing 1-0 to Coleraine.
“They did Killarney Athletic proud,” Ger added.
