Town survey shows support for pedestrianisation
A survey of residents and businesses in Killarney has revealed that a significant number of respondents are in favour of making Plunkett Street and Main Street pedestrian only zones.
Of the 1,332 responses received via an online survey initiated by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, 629 – or 47 percent – expressed a preference for the pedestrianisation of both streets.
15 percent were in favour of pedestrianising Plunkett Street only, and eight percent would prefer to see a no traffic zone on Main Street only.
A total of 26 percent of those that responded wanted neither Main Street or Plunkett Street pedestrianised.
The ‘Let’s Talk About Town' survey engaged with people living and working in Killarney to get a snapshot of what is important to them, what they need and expect from the business community, and measures they would like to see implemented.
“This was a great opportunity to get feedback from the public on what they see as important factors in creating a safe and vibrant new Killarney,” Paul Sherry, President of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, said.
“We all need to rebuild together and this survey will serve as a starting point in changing the ways we do business and how to better satisfy the needs of our customers, locals and visitors.”
See next week’s Killarney Advertiser for a full breakdown on the survey results and local business and political reaction.
