Special guests visit Ian in hospital
B
Brave Killarney youngster Ian O’Connell had a couple of famous visitors this week as Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae and TV personality Lucy Kennedy called to see him at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaoire.
The 16-year-old is currently undergoing rehab following a tragic cycling accident last August that damaged his neck and spine.
Ian was in good spirits when we spoke on Wednesday and he said the pair, who recently starred together in a memorable episode of Living With Lucy on RTÉ, were “very nice” and stayed chatting with him for an hour and a half.
The Pinewood native also thanked the people of Killarney for their support since the accident. “It has been phenomenal,” he said. “It helps so much.” To date, over €120,000 has been raised in aid of the Ian O’Connell Fund by clubs, schools, businesses and locals.
Ian says they’re looking after him up in Dún Laoghaoire and that the rehab is going well. “It’s tiring but it’s good. It has to be done.”
“They’re letting me home Paddy’s weekend,” he continued. “I’m looking forward now to going home and meeting everyone. I can’t wait.”
