Killarney welcomes Rotary Ireland leaders
T
THE importance of increasing Rotary membership was highlighted by Rotary Ireland leaders at a keynote gathering in Killarney this afternoon.
Killarney Rotary Club hosted Rotary Ireland District Governor Garth Arnold and Assistant Governor Conny Ovesen at a special lunch in Gaby’s Restaurant, High Street. In his address, Mr Arnold spoke of satellite clubs, the first of which was established in Ireland in July and which is sponsored by Dublin North Rotary Club, and noted how such clubs can also boost membership among young people.
Killarney Rotary President Eduard Schmidt-Zorner highlighted the work done by Killarney Rotary Club. “We have supported over 30 charities and projects over the last few years and we also do huge work locally,” Mr Schmidt-Zorner told the gathering.
Killarney Rotary Club has a strong youth involvement in the form of the its Youth Leadership Competition and the Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year (whose Kerry finalists proceed to represent Killarney Rotary club in the UK).
The club also organises mock interviews for secondary school students and hosts a number of exciting social and charity events throughout the year. “One of our main events is the Evening of Wine & Art in November, which is supported by a large number of people in our community,” added the Killarney Rotary Club president. “We have an afternoon tea with a fashion show in October which attracts more and more visitors every year and we will have a haibun competition next year which will involve the students of the schools in Killarney, Milltown and Killorglin.”
