Killarney to boldly go where no town has gone before
A new petition has emerged from the final frontier, sparking excitement amongst Star Trek fans worldwide.
The petition, launched by Sean Daly on Change.org, proposes the construction of a statue in Killarney to honour Chief Miles O'Brien, a main character from the Star Trek universe.
According to Star Trek lore, Chief O'Brien (played by Colm Meaney in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) , hails from Killarney, born in September 2328.
"Star Trek represents a hopeful vision of the future – one where poverty and discrimination have been overcome on planet Earth," the petition reads. "This statue would shine as a beacon of hope for our world standing at the centre of one of the most beautiful regions of Ireland, if not the galaxy."
The petition has garnered significant support from Star Trek fans, raising the possibility of Killarney becoming a pilgrimage site for Trekkies across the globe.
