Killarney remembers Sheila Courtney
T
The town of Killarney was deeply saddened this past week following the passing of popular local woman Sheila Courtney. Sheila (nee Kelleher) was originally from St Brendan’s Place and later lived in High Street and Ardshanavooley.
In 1956, Sheila married Michael Courtney and the pair became known as the King and Queen of High Street. Michael operated a successful tailoring business and he was also long serving member of Killarney Urban District Council. During this time he and Sheila became great friends to the Killarney Advertiser.
Following his untimely death in 2010, Michael was succeeded on the council by his sons (first Hugh and later Paddy).
Another son, Donie, is an acclaimed actor who created the wonderful one-man show God Has No Country, the life story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty.
Mrs Courtney is survived by her children Kathryn, Nancy, Paddy, Shelanne, Gary, Mike, Hugh and Donie, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, 23 grandchildren, brothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, other relatives and a great many friends.
