A
AS THE Tour de France concluded its run, Killarney Cycling Club was setting records of its own at the weekend at the Kerry Cycling Championships.
The annual championships, in Killorglin, drew from clubs across the county with the most coveted title being the senior county champion. This was achieved by a deserving Killarney team who played an experienced role in delivering Conor Kissane to the line and won the race from one of Ireland’s top amateur riders Sean Lacey. The team prize was also won by Killarney which also took the honours in the under-12 and under-14 categories, second prize in the under-16 section and also the junior title.
The many placings at all levels comprehensively stamped Killarney Cycling Club as the dominant force here in the Kingdom.
While this was going on at home, Killarney's mountain bikers were distinguishing themselves on the national stage, with Luke Murphy taking gold in the under-12s and his brother Jack taking third in the junior category. Jack will now go to the European championships, representing Ireland on an international stage.
Richard Maes exchanged his road bike for a mountain bike to take a national title in the M30 category.
Again the strength of the club members' mountain biking prowess ensured that all categories Killarney riders were at the business end powering their way to ensure dominance on the national scene.
