Glenflesk Ballad Group came out on top in the Munster Scór na nÓg finals held on Saturday.

The County Cork venue of the Eire Og GAA Pavilion, Ovens was the setting for the event with the hall packed to capacity.

The large audience were treated to a fantastic evening's entertainment from the club representatives of the six participating counties which this year marked the 50th Anniversary of Scór na nÓg.

Kerry were involved in all eight disciplines and their huge band of supporters had plenty to cheer about as the day panned out. The day's activities got underway with the first part of the Trath na gCeist.

Kerry were represented by Tralee Parnells and after a very competitive and close discipline in stage one the Kerry boys came in first place; then three clubs; Kerry, Cork and Tipperary out of the five teams went forward to the stage events and having already qualified for the national finals it was a matter of who would be Munster champions; but Cork turned the tables on Tralee Parnells to claim the title by a single point.

Spa, Killarney renowned for their dancing skills at Rince Seit have once again entered the winners enclosure and after last year's success, they will be striving to make it two in a row of national titles.

On this occasion it just proved a bridge too far as Piarsaigh na Dromoda were represented in both; Rince Foirne agus Nuachleas with 'The Yanks' and certainly didn’t leave their county down, nor did Norin Ní Eili from Glenflesk in Anhranaoicht with 'Sweet Inniscara' and in Aithriseoireacht Gobnait Ní Chroinion reciting 'Mary Ann McGee'.

"It was a great honour for Coiste Scór in the county to have so much success and also so many involved at this stage of the competition and all the participants can feel proud of their performances, they did both their respective clubs and county proud on the day, and on behalf of Coiste Scór Ciarrai we wish all the very best in their quest for national glory on May 6 at the INEC Killarney at 3pm."

Work on new, fully accessible public toilet facilities at Killarney Library is set to begin on Monday, July 20, marking the realisation of a project first tabled over two years ago.

The upgrade was initially put forward by Councillor Marie Moloney in May 2024, when she raised a motion at a Kerry County Council meeting highlighting the unacceptable lack of disabled toilets in a public building. At the time, Cllr Moloney noted that while access ramps were in place, several library users with disabilities were disappointed by the lack of facilities. “I will be keeping the pressure on to have these facilities provided as soon as possible,” she stated at the time.
Delivered by the Council’s Facilities Section, the upcoming works are expected to be completed in the autumn. The development will provide a new entrance to the toilet area, a fully accessible toilet, and baby changing facilities.
Killarney Library will remain open throughout the construction period, with all regular services continuing as normal. To ensure safety, the front porch, the existing public toilets, and the events room will be temporarily closed. Visitors will access the library via a signposted side entrance, and alternative public toilets will be available nearby at the High Street Car Park.

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) has issued a warm weather warning for anyone climbing in the region after being called to assist a walker on Sunday.

The rescue team was tasked to the Devil’s Ladder area of Carrauntoohil (Corrán Tuathail) to help a climber experiencing severe exhaustion and dehydration. Volunteers successfully assisted the walker down to an awaiting vehicle.
With the current heatwave continuing, KMRT is reminding all hillwalkers to prepare adequately before setting out.
The team recommends carrying at least one extra litre of water, wearing sunscreen, and using a peaked or wide-brimmed hat. Walkers should set out early in the morning to ensure they are off the mountains before the peak heat builds in the middle of the day.
KMRT also advises walkers to consider changing their plans to less strenuous routes or rescheduling their climbs entirely until temperatures drop.
