The daughter and sister-in-law of Killarney woman Kay McCarthy who sadly lost her cancer battle four years ago have organised a fundraiser in her memory. Jenny McCarthy and her sister-in-law Aoife Murphy plan a '3k for Kay' for the Irish Cancer Society (ICS) next week running on April 24 and 25, to mark what would have been Kay's 60th birthday and anniversary respectively.

Participants are asked to wear blue, which was Kay's favourite colour, and take on a 3k challenge over the few days.

"It's coming up to mom's 60th birthday on April 24 and her anniversary on the 25, and we had this in mind," Jenny told the Killarney Advertiser.

"I also have two videos that will be on social media next week, one documenting mom's cancer journey and one with over 15 families that have lost someone to cancer who are using the video to raise awareness while remembering their loved one. Singer Ashley Kerins from the Tralee Road did the background music. They'll be going up next week on the Little Steps Big Futures social media pages."

Kay, who worked in the accounts office in Daly's SuperValu for 25 years and in Pretty Polly before that, was a much loved local woman. She was diagnosed with stomach cancer and bravely fought a three and a half year battle.

"She was probably one of the most honest, caring people. She was the one person in the family we'd ask for advice. She was a wonderful wife to dad and very fashionable."

Those taking part in the Just Giving: 3K for Kay- In memory of Kay McCarthy fundraiser can donate any amount, she added.

"We'd ask you take a photo and post it on to the social media pages and you'll be entered in to a draw. We have a one night stay with dinner and breakfast at the Ross Hotel, 3kg of sweets from Sweet King and a customised frame from The Guestbook Studio."

Two young local girls showed great business initiative on Saturday ahead of the Kerry v Donegal match at Fitzgerald Stadium.

Erin McSweeney and Jessie Doolin set up a sweet stall outside a house on Lewis Road, catching the thousands of football fans walking towards the grounds.

The enterprising pair did a busy trade selling soft drinks, sweets, and chocolates to the passing crowds before throw-in.

Their match-day venture also caught the attention of the national sports media, with a photograph of the girls at their stall captured by Sportsfile photographer Stephen McCarthy ahead of the game.

Noel O’Neill has claimed first place in the Unrestricted category of the latest Killarney Camera Club competition, which focused on the theme of the ‘Kerry Landscape’.

His winning photograph, titled ‘Conor Pass Lake and the Three Sisters’, features a detailed study of Mullaghveal located beneath the Conor Pass.

The image captures the wide sweep of the valley, utilizing an elevated viewpoint that allows the glacial landscape to unfold toward the Atlantic horizon. The composition highlights the quiet lakes in the foreground against the dark, rocky slopes of the valley, with the distant outline of the Three Sisters adding further depth and scale to the scene.

The judges praised the photograph as an outstanding example of landscape work, noting its effective balance of composition, light, and perspective to capture the vastness of the West Kerry terrain.
