Burial ground running out claims councillor

Loved ones may have to be buried outside the parish of Beaufort, claims one county councillor - who’s calling on the Council to take urgent action.
Councillor Michael Cahill told a recent Council meeting the number of burial plots available are very quickly running out in Churchtown Burial Ground and asked them to also take into consideration the fact that Beaufort is a very large parish with a large population.
The councillor has proposed that the Council prioritises the acquisition of lands in Beaufort for a new burial ground or an extension to the existing burial ground in Churchtown.
"Residents are becoming increasingly concerned that their loved ones may have to be buried outside the parish," he said.
The Council, in their reply said that based on current burial rates there are approximately five years remaining in Churchtown Burial Ground, Beaufort.
‘Kerry County Council have had discussions with a number of landowners with a view to both extending the existing burial ground and purchasing a site for a new burial ground in the area. We have been unsuccessful to date in these discussions. Our efforts to acquire land will continue and any assistance that members may be able to provide would be welcome’.
