A Pint of Plain & A Ball of Malt
L
Last Thursday evening, Offaly’s legendary whiskey, Tullamore DEW, descended upon Killarney. At Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder, Brand Ambassador Kevin Piggott conducted a DEW and Brew tasting, pairing three craft beers with three Tullamore DEW whiskeys. The evening commenced with a Tullamore DEW original, which was paired with Carlow-based brewery O’Haras Red Ale. Think roasted nuts and caramel flavours.
The whiskey and beer enthusiasts present were then introduced to the Tullamore DEW 14-Year-Old, which was to be complemented by the O’Haras Hop Session, a delightfully citrusy and fragrant pairing.
The last pairing was notably the heaviest, the Tullamore DEW 12-Year-Old with Scottish brewery Innis & Gunn Tullamore DEW barrel-aged stout. The rich, chocolaty notes of the beer harmonised perfectly with the caramel and dark chocolate flavours of the whiskey. In between, Kevin narrated Irish boilermaker stories and shared toasts from around the world.
After the last pairing and plenty of good humour, Kevin brought out a Tullamore DEW-branded bag and pulled out a bottle of Tullamore DEW Black 43 – a pot still whiskey finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks that is no longer produced. This whiskey had great body, lots of character and was the perfect way to round off our monthly tasting.
Next on the bar's calendar will be a Teeling tasting at the end of May, so make sure you stay tuned for more information. Sláinte!
