It was a surprise call but one which put a smile on a Sneem man's face this week when he heard that he had won a brand new car.

John Knightly from Sneem got a great surprise when Killarney Credit Union rang to tell him he had won a Ford Puma Titanium in the Killarney Credit Union Members Draw.

John picked up the keys of his new car from Mark Murphy, CEO Killarney Credit Union, accompanied by his wife and daughters.

“We currently have just over 2,400 members in the draw which is held twice a year," Karena McCarthy, Killarney Credit Union Marketing Officer, said.

"Our prizes include a new car and cash prizes ranging from €250 to €1,000. Our next draw will take place in January 2022.”

Members can apply for the draw at any of the branches or apply online on www.killarneycu.ie. €12 will be taken from the member's account twice a year as an entry fee.

The cash prize winners were Triona O’Connor, Joseph O’Doherty, Michael Fleming, Helen O’Sullivan, James Kissane, Collette and Eithne Willock, Mary O’Leary, Noreen Moriarty O’Sullivan, Geraldine and Gerard O’Mahony, Cecelia Ring, Sinead Buckley and Michael McCarthy.

“The draw is limited to members of Killarney Credit Union and anyone over the age of 18 can apply to join," she added.

Celebrations are underway in Killarney after Centra at The Reeks Gateway on Tralee Road sold a EuroMillions ticket worth €1,005,000 in the Friday, August 21 draw.

The lucky winner secured the life-changing sum through the special Ireland Only Raffle event after purchasing a Quick Pick ticket on the day of the draw.
Store owner John Bowler, who has operated the shop for over 20 years, expressed his delight after receiving the news from the National Lottery.
“There’s a great buzz around the store and we’re absolutely delighted,” Bowler said. “We have a mix of local customers and visitors coming through our doors every day, so the winner could be anyone. While we’ve sold fantastic prizes over the years, this is by far the biggest. It’s wonderful news for Killarney.”
National Lottery spokesperson Emma Monaghan urged anyone who bought a ticket at the store on Friday to check their numbers carefully. The ticket holder is advised to sign the back of the ticket, keep it safe, and contact the National Lottery prize claims team to arrange collection.
