National Park to host European BioBlitz competition

Published

Killarney’s nature and wildlife will take centre stage from Friday, May 15, to Sunday, May 24, as the town celebrates National Biodiversity Week.

The annual 10-day event offers a variety of free activities funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

These events provide opportunities for the public to connect with nature and learn from local experts and groups working to protect natural heritage.

This year, Killarney National Park has once again registered for the Natura 2000 BioBlitz.

This is a friendly competition between European nature sites, reserves, and national parks to see which location can record the highest number of species during the week.

In last year’s event, Killarney performed strongly, placing 8th out of 86 competing sites with 647 individual species recorded.

The Killarney National Park Education Centre is calling on the public to help identify and record as many species as possible this month.

To take part, volunteers can download the Obsidentify app and use it to scan plants and wildlife within the park boundaries between May 15 and May 24.

All scans made during this period will count toward Killarney’s total in the EU-wide competition.

Organisers hope that local involvement will help the park climb even higher in the European rankings while highlighting the diversity of the local ecosystem.

Killarney National Park will serve as the venue for this year’s Kerry Alzheimer’s Memory Walk on Sunday, September 20.

Participants will gather at the Deenagh Lodge ahead of an 11.00am start to complete a 5km scenic route through the park.

The event takes place on the eve of World Alzheimer’s Day as part of a nationwide series of walks supported by Aviva.

Now in its seventh year, the initiative raises vital funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland to support local dementia services, including daycare centres, family carer training, social clubs, dementia cafés, and the national helpline.

Last year, nearly 3,000 walkers across Ireland raised over €240,000 for the cause.

The Kerry walk will be led by local champions Kathriona Sheehan, Niamh Murphy, Lynda Phillips, and Melissa Molyneaux, who are walking in support of all those living with dementia.
“We are proud to lead our annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva to help fund local dementia services in Kerry,” they said. “The event is about community and helping spread awareness by walking together to raise vital funds for care, support, and hope for the days ahead. Join us in Killarney on Sunday, 20th September to show your support.”

With over 40 walks scheduled across Ireland, members of the public can walk in memory of a loved one or to show solidarity. Further details and registration are available at memorywalk.ie.
