Killarney National Park Education team have once again surpassed and exceeded the Bioblitz challenge during a very successful Biodiversity Week 2025 in the National Park.

The park placed eighth out of 86 participating National Park sites across Europe.
During the week, 647 species were recorded within Killarney National Park.
This marks an improvement from last year's ninth-place finish, where 514 species were recorded.
The park saw a significant increase in public involvement this year, with many members of the general public contributing to the recordings. Veluwe Natura 2000 site in the Netherlands secured first place with 1,627 species.
During Biodiversity Week, Killarney National Park Education Centre staff organised nature walks in Derrycunnihy and Ross Island.
Participants were encouraged to use smartphones to photograph flora and fauna and upload their findings to the ‘ObsIdentify app’.
This competition aims to raise awareness of the variety of species in Killarney National Park. Citizen science projects like BioBlitz assist educators and conservation rangers in monitoring and recording species within the park.

Anne Kelly secured the second-place spot with a striking photograph of a skilled craftsman repairing spectacles.

Captured from the other side of a window, the image immediately draws the viewer in and beautifully portrays the subject at work.

At first glance, the photograph has an almost old-fashioned appearance. However, a closer look reveals an intriguing collection of glasses, with modern frames displayed alongside vintage and costume eyewear.
