Last year National Park and Wildlife Service Outdoor staff in Killarney National Park collected over 30,000 acorns from registered collection areas of local provenance with Killarney National Park, mainly the ancient Oak and Yew woodlands of Derrycunnihy and Muckross Peninsula.
The woodlands are said to have the most extensive and oldest areas of native woodlands in Ireland and Northern Europe.
The Outdoor Staff painstakingly seowed 31,375 acorns to be exact, mainly Sessile Oak, under the supervision of Horticulturalist Gerry Murphy and Gardener Stephen Moore following successful germination in Springtime and then placed on outdoor benches in Summer.
