SEEING as Kerry has already produced one of the world’s most famous actors in Michael Fassbender, it’s gratifying to see it is also home to rising stars at the other side of the lens. A group of talented young movie makers from Ballyheigue clinched the coveted prize in the What’s Your Story competition.

Leading cloud security firm Trend Micro, with EMEA headquarters in Cork, today (Monday) announced the winners of its contest, which aims to promote and encourage conversations about being online amongst young people and which celebrated its fifth birthday this year. The overall “What’s Your Story” school prize was won by St Joseph’s National School Ballyheigue in Co. Kerry for its pupils’ video ‘What does the Internet mean to you?’.

Niall Calnan Walsh from Rochestown in Cork won the overall individual winner for his video ‘The Out-ernet’.
“The entries really depict that young people see the Internet in a very positive light. A place to share memories, leave a mark on the world, offering opportunities for everyone to expand their knowledge and potential while also being a great place to unwind”, said Avril Ronan, Global Program Manager for Internet Safety at Trend Micro EMEA. “It is so refreshing to see how young people - digital natives - view the online world and it is clear that they see it as a place to nurture creativity and success.

“Students of St Joseph’s NS in Ballyheigue depicted the essence of this year’s campaign and we want to congratulate all of the children and their teacher, Terence Dineen, for creating this fun, inspiring video.”

All video and poster submissions were judged on their ability to inspire, as well as how effectively entrants have promoted their entries via social media/word of mouth. Judges included representatives from Twitter, TY Ireland, Facebook, Webwise.ie, Cork Science Festival and Smartfutures.ie.

The exhibition, which runs from March 10 to March 31, explores the foundational years of the political party within the county between 1926 and 1933.

The exhibition details how the party established itself in a county where Civil War divisions were particularly deep-seated. It covers the transition of local figures from revolutionary activities to parliamentary politics and the intense election battles of the late 1920s. Visitors will be able to view documents and archives that illustrate how the party built its organisation across South Kerry in its first decade.

As part of the event, local historian and author Dr. Owen O’Shea will give a public lecture at the library on Thursday, March 26, at 7:00 p.m. His talk will focus on the foundation of the party and the “bullets to ballots” transition in Kerry politics. The exhibition is free to attend and will be open during the library’s scheduled operating hours throughout the month of March.
The project is the result of extensive research funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. The grant was awarded under the Commemorations Bursary Scheme for 2025-2026 and managed by the Royal Irish Academy. This scheme supports local research that helps the public better understand the political and social evolution of Ireland following the Civil War.
