Hillwalker airlifted to hospital following 150m fall
A male hillwalker in his 60s was rescued on Saturday after falling 150m during a hike.
Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) was tasked to the incident in the Reeks at 4pm after reports that the male had fallen from a point close to the top of Cnoc na Toinne.
The man was walking with a group who had completed a hike to Carrauntoohil and were making their way down to the Hag’s Glen via the Zig Zags (Bóthar na Gíge) route on Cnoc na Toinne when the incident occurred.
A number of team members who were already on the hill proceeded to the scene to treat the casualty. Other team members were deployed on foot with additional First Aid and technical equipment from Ard na Locha in the Hags Glen and once they arrived on scene the casualty was secured to a stretcher and lowered 350m over steep terrain to the valley floor.
The stretcher was then carried out to Ard na Locha from where the casualty was subsequently airlifted to UHK by Rescue 115 Coastguard helicopter.
The callout, which involved 25 members of the team, concluded at approximately 9pm.
