Killarney Paralympian Jordan Lee has been named as one of two flag-bearers for the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games which gets underway just before 12 noon today (Tuesday)

He and Britney Arendse (Para Powerlifting) will lead Team Ireland into the Olympic Stadium on Tokyo later today.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Marie Moloney has extended her support to Jordan on behalf of the people of the town.

"I would like on my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Killarney Municipal District to wish Jordan Lee of Killarney Valley A.C,  the very best of luck in his event in Tokyo.

"We are very lucky to have four people from Kerry represent us in the Olympics in Tokyo this year.  Jordan has already done us all proud by having qualified which is a huge achievement in itself.  He is one of a 29 strong Team Ireland who have travelled to Tokyo  to represent Ireland in the Paralympics.

"I would like to also congratulate Tomas Griffin, Jordan’s coach on having helped Jordan achieve being selected to represent Ireland.  Of course this is not the first time Jordan has represented Ireland, he first came to fame in Basketball and then switched to athletics and now his main event in Tokyo is the high jump.

"Great credit has also to go the committee who worked so hard to provide the athletic track in Killarney and it just goes to prove what can be achieved if the facilities are in place to help the athletes.

"We will all be cheering Jordan on and as he takes to the field in Tokyo on Sunday next and no matter what the outcome, he is already a proven  champion."

Coverage of today's ceremony begins at11:50am on RTÉ 2.
