Celtic Steps back after long-running planning row

Celtic Steps will celebrate a new lease of life by performing for the first time in 14 months tomorrow night (Saturday).

The Irish dance and music spectacular will record a behind-closed-doors show at the INEC which will be broadcast on a yet to be announced date.

It is the Killarney team’s first show after a long-running planning permission row came to an end this week.

The show, popular with locals and visitors alike, was based at Killarney Racecourse for the last number of years but faced challenges over late night noise and crowds.

However, the team behind Celtic Steps and Killarney Racecourse Company worked behind the scenes to overcome the issues.

“Each and every remedial action required to comply with all the planning requirements was met along with the substantial financial cost. The result is a stunning theatre for our show – fully sound-proofed, fully air conditioned with large bus and car parking facilities,” said a Celtic Steps statement issued this week. “The show, without doubt, would not be still running in Killarney without the foresight of Killarney Race Company. We appreciate the huge support from all our local residents, businesses and tourism interests.”

Celtic Steps is already preparing for next season and Saturday’s INEC concert is a part of their 2021 plans.

“Our main ethos has always been the nurturing and promotion of Irish traditional music, song and dance, we believe that our benefit to the economy, the creation of 55 jobs and our determination to promote both Killarney and County Kerry has only increased our resolve. Now is the time for us all to promote, produce and protect our amazing jewel, Killarney."

Celtic Steps thanked The INEC Arena team and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for their efforts in getting Saturday night’s performance off the ground.

Free entry for under 18s at Ross Castle

Young people and families can explore Ross Castle free of charge throughout August as part of a national Office of Public Works (OPW) initiative.

The 15th-century stronghold on the shores of Lough Leane will waive admission fees for all visitors under 18 from August 1 to August 31. The scheme aims to make cultural and historic sites more accessible to young people and families during the summer holidays.
Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. The promotion applies across fee-paying OPW heritage sites nationwide, excluding Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Bóinne.
Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran, said the initiative offers young people a memorable way to connect with history, nature, and culture over the summer break.

Killarney judoka gain international experience in Bath

Eight members of Killarney Judo Club travelled to England last weekend for an international training camp at the University of Bath, with club member Ciara Forde competing at the West of England competition.

Accompanying five families, the young athletes joined 120 competitors from across the UK for two days of training and sparring in a high-performance environment.
The trip provided many of the judoka with their first opportunity to train alongside international athletes. It also offered members a look at a purpose-built facility, supporting the club’s push for a dedicated dojo at the Derreen Sports Project.
Coach Tim Kelly said:
“This camp gave our players the opportunity to test themselves in a challenging environment. Bath University has a proud history of producing Olympians, and we hope the experience inspires our young judoka to aim even higher.”
The club takes a summer break before returning on August 13 to prepare three members for their Black Belt grading later this year. Children’s classes resume on Monday, September 7. New members can contact Tim Kelly on 086 260 1591.
