Under age drinking parties on the rise

There are concerns in the town that the lack of events and social outlets for young people is leading to an increase in illegal drink and drug parties in secluded areas throughout the town.
A local businessman discovered the remains of one illegal party near his town centre premises on Monday morning.
He and his staff spent four hours cleaning up empty beer cans, spirit bottles, cigarette papers and other litter after what he suspects was a large group gathering near a town centre laneway over the weekend.
The businessman did not want to be named as he is worried that the illegal parties could have a negative effect on his trade as people could be afraid to visit his premises as a result of the litter left there – especially in a time when people are extra cautious about personal hygiene.
“Parents need to know where their teenagers are going once they are dropped into the town centre at night,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Shopkeepers need to be vigilant too. They are buying the drink in local shops and taking with them some empty coffee cups from the coffee stand – it’s obvious why they need the cups.”
The town centre incident comes on the back of repeated, but unconfirmed, reports of underage drinking parties and bonfires in the National Park.
“We will investigate all reports of underage drinking,” a Killarney Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.
Members of the public can immediately report a crime or any incident of anti-social behaviour by texting KILLARNEY, along with a brief account of the incident and the location to 50555.
The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society has officially revealed the Humanitarian Medal and a €3,000 bursary that will be presented to a new recipient in Killarney later this year.
The international award programme is returning this October following a six-year absence, made possible through funding from the Kerry County Council Community Support Programme, the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, and local sponsors.
The public nomination process is now open to individuals, teams, or voluntary organisations providing exceptional humanitarian services at home or overseas.

Beaufort Golf Club to host first Kerry Mental Health Association Golf Classic
Kerry Mental Health Association has announced details of its inaugural charity golf classic, which will take place at Beaufort Golf Club on Friday, July 31.
Golfers are being encouraged to enter the event, which is scheduled for the start of the final bank holiday weekend of the summer. The registration fee for a team of four is €400, with tee times available from early morning onwards.
The tournament will follow a format where the best two scores count on holes 1 to 17, and three scores count on the 18th hole. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place, alongside individual prizes for Nearest the Pin and the Longest Drive.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will directly support the purchase of a new transport vehicle for local mental health day centres and fund the rollout of free and affordable mental health educational activities across the county.
Kerry Mental Health Association General Manager John Drummey stated that the outing serves as both a fundraiser and an awareness-raiser to support people in Kerry facing mental health challenges, alongside their families and carers.
