A new book on the stories of the Kilcummin area, the first of its kind to be published in 20 years, was launched by author Conor Dolan last night (Thursday) at Kilcummin GAA club.

Doolan, a well-known local writer and historian, has compiled the book entitled ‘Kilcummin: Folk, Land and Liberty’.

At last night’s launch Dolan, and former Irish Examiner journalist local man Donal Hickey, discussed the process and content of the book to a packed audience.

Conor believes the publication will prove vital for genealogists, the Irish diaspora or anyone tracing family history. The book’s main focus is the period between the 1700s and 1920s.

“It is a combination of trade directories, information from old maps, newspaper and military archives and it paints a picture of Kilcummin in that period of time,” Conor told the Killarney Advertiser. “There has been great interest from abroad.”

Popular former parish priest of Kilcummin, Fr Tom Looney, was guest of honour at last night’s launch.

“Fr Tom assisted in the choosing of the title of the book,” he added. “I spent a lot of time in Killarney Library and the Local History and Archives department at Kerry Library in Tralee. I thank all the institutions and individuals who assisted me during my research.”

The evening concluded with music by local musician Thady O’Connor who sang ‘My Killarney Rose’, a song written by the author’s grandfather, Daniel J Hannon of Brosna and written in praise of his grandmother Peggy Guerin who hailed from the Reanlougha area of Kilcummin.

The Killarney Local Injury Clinic is expected to be open by Q3 2026, according to the HSE. The proposed unit will be located on the grounds of St Columbanus Home.

The timeline was confirmed in response to a Parliamentary Question from Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill, who said the project will follow the relocation of the Community Nursing Unit from its current site to the grounds of the old St Finan’s Hospital. Once the transfer is complete, construction of the injury clinic can proceed.
Deputy Cahill described the two new health facilities as “a fantastic addition for Killarney and the wider East, Mid, and South Kerry regions” and noted they will help reduce waiting times at University Hospital Kerry A&E.
“I will continue to push for enhanced health services for our people,” added the Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Older People.
The new clinic is expected to provide urgent care services for local residents, easing pressure on hospital emergency departments and improving access to timely treatment in the Killarney area.
