4-year-old Liam Leahy from Kilcummin in Killarney has really gone the extra mile (or kilometre) to help all young people from Kerry. So far he has raised €125 for #teamKDYS in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Liam is asking for more support as he wants to raise over €400!

Liam, with a little help from his dad Patrick, who is a well-known jarvey in Killarney, signed up to support #teamKDYS but he needs to wait a few more years until he can cycle the Ring.  That didn’t stop the amazing young man from helping out.

Mr Tim O Donoghue (CEO) said: “We were quite simply blown away when we heard about Liam’s efforts and we are so grateful to him and Patrick for their wonderful support. Despite all the challenges facing young people today, KDYS is committed to Building Futures for all young people in Kerry. To see a young person want to do something and to help is really fantastic. We want to say a huge thank you to Liam and Patrick and to everyone who has contributed so far.”

Liam’s dad Patrick explained how it came about.

“Liam saw the KDYS poster and asked me what it was about, and who was KDYS. I told him about the cycle and that KDYS help young people. He said, ‘I’m a young person… I want to help too’. I contacted KDYS for Liam and it went from there. They do great work and need support. It was great to learn that people can help without cycling.”

Anyone who wants to help can do so by donating to Liam Leahy’s #teamKDYS page on Everyday Hero, by dropping into KDYS in Fairhill in Killarney and adding to Liam’s sponsorship card there, or by contacting KDYS on 064 6631748.

KDYS are asking cyclists to sing up to #teamKDYS and cycle to support Kerry’s youth.

KDYS provide support in a number of areas, including active and healthy living, personal development, arts and creativity, eating well and nutrition, helping transition from primary to secondary school, mentoring, preparing for the workplace of tomorrow, team-building and leadership, mental and spiritual well-being, being resilient and dealing with anxiety, digital and online safety, and learning skills for future employment.

The MacGillycuddy Reeks at Christmas time offer a cure for whatever the heart needs, whether it is peace, relaxation, or reflection. Melissa described spending time there as magical at any point of the year, but particularly during the winter months when the mountains are covered in snow.
Climbing one of the winter routes on Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s highest mountain, requires essential safety gear, including crampons, an ice axe, and a helmet, making the experience “incredibly exciting and fun.”
Melissa said that she enjoys visiting the stunning peaks of the MacGillycuddy Reeks often because it is a place she can never get enough of. She finds that mountains make her feel alive, giving her joy, thrill, satisfaction, and peace. She added that the feeling of tranquility and calm on the mountains encompasses every ounce of her.
