ROSE OF TRALEE Maggie McEldowney has arrived safely in India where she will spend the week volunteering with The Hope Foundation and see first-hand the day-to-day struggles of the children living on the streets and in the slums of Kolkata.

Hope is a charity supporting overseas development and tackling humanitarian issues in Kolkata, India. Hope works with the most vulnerable street and slum children and their families. The charity operates over 60 projects in Kolkata and has provided 30,000 children with access to education and a further 300,000 adults with access to healthcare and training programmes.

Maggie will visit the Hope projects including their child protection centres established to get the children off the streets and into education. Many of the children, who have come through Hope education centres, return to work with Hope in their training centres.

Speaking from India, Hope honorary director Maureen Forrest said: “Maggie is a fantastic role model and we are delighted she agreed to become an ambassador for Hope. We are thrilled that she accepted our invitation to come to Kolkata and visit the girls and boys in our projects.”
Maggie is the seventh Rose of Tralee to be announced as an Ambassador for Irish charity, The HOPE Foundation.

The Killarney Local Injury Clinic is expected to be open by Q3 2026, according to the HSE. The proposed unit will be located on the grounds of St Columbanus Home.

The timeline was confirmed in response to a Parliamentary Question from Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill, who said the project will follow the relocation of the Community Nursing Unit from its current site to the grounds of the old St Finan’s Hospital. Once the transfer is complete, construction of the injury clinic can proceed.
Deputy Cahill described the two new health facilities as “a fantastic addition for Killarney and the wider East, Mid, and South Kerry regions” and noted they will help reduce waiting times at University Hospital Kerry A&E.
“I will continue to push for enhanced health services for our people,” added the Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Older People.
The new clinic is expected to provide urgent care services for local residents, easing pressure on hospital emergency departments and improving access to timely treatment in the Killarney area.
