Killarney sprinter Sarah Leahy helps Ireland to European Games glory

Killarney sprinter Sarah Leahy helped Ireland to a second-place finish in their 4x100m heat at the European Games in Poland on Wednesday. The valuable points earned by Leahy and her teammates contributed to Ireland’s first-place finish in Division 3 of the competition, a result which will see them competing in Division 2 next time around.
Killarney Valley AC athlete Leahy ran the first leg of the 4x100 well and the girls in green looked to be heading for first place after Mollie O'Reilly and Joan Healy continued the charge. Unfortunately, an error on the handover between Healy and Adeyemi Talabibut cost them valuable seconds.
This allowed Austria to power ahead as the Irish had to make do with a runners-up spot. Israel came third.
Shortly after this race, the men’s 4x100m team secured victory in their heat to leave Ireland in pole position with 25 of 37 events completed.
The Irish were still top of the pile at the end of the day on Thursday. They registered 494 points in total, well clear of Austria (473.50) in second and Israel (434) in third.
Cue boisterous celebrations and cries of ‘Olé, Olé, Olé’ for Leahy and her compatriots as Ireland clinched their spot in Division 2 for the next European Games in Madrid in 2025.
