THE wagon trail led out the Muckross Road transporting theatregoers from Killarney into America’s Wild West last night as the curtain rose on Calamity Jane at the INEC.
The opening night of the three-night run delighted the audience from start to finish and is a credit to cast and crew.
Super-talented Michelle O’Callaghan brings colourful Calamity to life in all her loveable glory, striding about the stage with gusto and holding her listeners spellbound with her superb vocals.
Calamity Jane can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood and Michelle’s comic turn as she portrays the character’s loveably boastful side is hilarious and touching.
Killarney Musical Society’s 31st production had the audience clapping along from the start and of course brought everyone to their feet in a well-deserved standing ovation as the curtain descended.
Derek O’Leary dazzles in as Wild Bill Hickok in what is Derek’s 25th consecutive show with Killarney Musical Society.
Star turns are also given by Lily MacMonagle as Susan, Fergal Cleary as Henry Miller, Padraig Creedon as Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin, Siobháin Bustin as Katie Brown, and Jack Patrick Healy as Francis Fryer.
Clionadh Ni Dheargain takes on the role of Adelaide Adams with aplomb while also enjoying the limelight are Paul O’Sullivan as Doc Pierce and Aidan Kiely as Rattlesnake The leads are wonderfully supported by the entire cast and crew.
This year’s musical, which has Independent Irish Health Food Ltd as its main sponsor, is led by director Killian Collins, musical director John O’Brien and choreographer Sarah Griffin.
A real must-see, the whip-crack-away production continues this evening, Thursday, March 10, and tomorrow, Friday, March 11. Tickets are available on the INEC website, box office and on Ticketmaster.

Farming representatives in Kerry are calling on the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to introduce a financial incentive for hunters to control the county’s growing deer population.

The request has been supported by Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill.
Deputy Cahill said the number of Red and Sika deer in Kerry has increased sharply in recent years, with animals now appearing in fields, gardens, and on roads across the county. He warned that deer pose a danger to public safety and can carry ticks that spread Lyme disease.
“Everybody is aware that the Red and Sika deer have moved far beyond the confines of Killarney National Park, roaming freely through Kerry, damaging crops and gardens and are a real threat to life and limb on our roads,” he said.
He added that previous efforts to cull herds have been unsuccessful. “Our farming body representatives are among the stakeholders who should be consulted and all possible solutions considered to improve the situation,” Deputy Cahill said.
Similar bounty schemes have been used successfully in the past for foxes and seals. Deputy Cahill confirmed he has submitted a Parliamentary Question to Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon to introduce a bounty for deer.
“I believe it is important to incentivise hunters to control deer numbers and assist in preventing accidents and tragedies in County Kerry,” he said.
