All welcome to join meitheal in battle against rhododendron
K
KILLARNEY ADVERTISER recently highlighted how rhododendron is blighting the beauty of our National Park. Following consultations with the National Parks & Wildlife Service, the voluntary group Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal has agreed to take responsibility for ongoing permanent eradication of rhododendron (per NPWS methodology) in the area from Torc Waterfall Car Park to turn-off for the Old Kenmare Road near Muckross Community Centre.
The group will to meet at Torc Waterfall Car Park at 9am tomorrow, Saturday, February 11. The meitheal is affiliated to Killarney Tidy Towns and has the support of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce.
“The NPWS staff will demonstrate their proven methodology, which involves stem injection of standing rhododendron, leading to permanent death of the plant. All equipment will be provided....gloves would be handy. Hopefully other organisations will come forward to help with this pilot project," said a spokesman for the meitheal.
