Unique Ukrainian embroidery project at St Mary’s Church

A remarkable living piece of Ukrainian history is being displayed in the heart of Killarney today (Friday, July 24) as part of an international cultural project.

Organised locally by Future of Ukrainian Nation (FOUN Kerry), the ‘Unity Rushnyk – Victory Rushny’ exhibition takes place along the fence of St Mary's Church starting at 2.00pm.
The Rushnyk, a traditional embroidered cloth, forms part of a global initiative that has travelled through Estonia, Austria, Scotland, England, and across Ireland. Hand-stitched by Ukrainian diaspora communities worldwide, the project grew to 166 metres long just last week in Dublin after the Ukrainian-Irish community added three new panels.
The display features intricate symbols representing the bond between the two nations. Alongside traditional Ukrainian guelder rose, stitches include the Irish clover, with both the Irish and Ukrainian flags stitched side-by-side as a mark of friendship and gratitude for the welcome shown to families in Kerry.
Organisers invite both the local community and international visitors to view the exhibition today and experience this powerful symbol of unity, culture, and shared history.

Glenflesk brothers qualify for Community Games Finals

Three brothers from Glenflesk have qualified for the National Community Games Finals in Carlow this August.

Robbie secured his place directly from the Kerry County Finals by winning gold in the U8 80m. His brothers Ryan (U14 800m) and Jacob (U10 200m) both won silver at county level before finishing second in their respective events at Saturday’s Regional Finals in Templemore.
The trio will represent Glenflesk and Kerry alongside fellow local qualifiers Dylan O’Connor (U10 100m) and Kaylee Lynch (U10 100m), bringing the area’s total to five athletes competing at the national finals.

OPINION: Show your Kerry pride by buying local

As the build-up to the big match heats up, green and gold gear is popping up everywhere across Killarney.

While the buzz is great, where you buy your match-day merchandise matters.
Temporary street vendors setting up on footpaths might add a bit of colour, but they give nothing back once the match is over. Buying your jerseys, flags, and scarves from established Killarney shops ensures your money stays in the local economy.
Local businesses support our town all year round. They pay rates, employ local staff, and sponsor local sports clubs, schools, and community groups whenever asked. When our teams need backing, local traders step up. Street stalls simply take their cash and leave.
Shopping in Killarney town centre protects local jobs and keeps our streets active. The pride we show for the Kerry jersey should match the support we give to the businesses keeping our town going.
Before heading off to back the Kingdom, support the local shops that support Killarney every day of the year. Buy local and keep the benefits at home.
