Teen wins gold in Brazilian martial arts competition

By Sean Moriarty
A Killarney teenager is celebrating winning gold and silver at the Dublin International Open Competition for Brazillian Jiu Jutsu.
A form of martial arts first developed by police in the South American country it has grown worldwide into a sport of its own in a similar way to karate and Taekwondo.
The Dublin event is the equivalent of the All-Ireland finals in the sport and Filip Jakubowski was the only Kerry teenager to qualify for the event.
The 16-year-old took up the sport around two years ago when he walked past the Movement & Fitness Club and saw people practicing the sport.
The New St gym is also home to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Capoeira Academy and the Dereen-based teenager was instantly hooked.
“It took off from there,” the St Brendan’s College student told the Killarney Advertiser.
He won gold in the ‘nogi’ section of the competition and silver in the ‘gi’ category.
