Take the plunge this Christmas Day
B
BY EVE KELLIHER
Whether you feel like showing off a few Michael Phelps-inspired moves on Muckross Lake or simply fancy dipping a toe in the water, plans are already in place for the 10th annual Christmas Day Dip at Dundag.
Killarney mum Niki McCarthy first organised the event in 2009 and since then it has raised over €50,000 for depression support charity Aware.
There will be a fancy dress theme this year and mince pies and hot dogs will help refuel you whether you’ve been demonstrating your best doggy paddle or Olympic butterfly.
“This year’s dip, which starts at 11am on December 25, will be extra special,” Niki, who is inviting everyone to dive in and show their support, said.
The Tiernaboul woman, together with her husband Dave and their children Mischa and Oscar, can be found on the lakeshore every December 25 and all ages are welcome to join them to make a splash this Christmas Day.
Niki organises the event in memory of her sister Sylvan Money, who took her own life in 2004, aged just 26.
“I wanted to do something that celebrated Sylvan’s life and at the same time try to help others who may be suffering,” she said.
“I would like to thank lifeguards Conor and Derek O'Leary and the Order of Malta who have provided the ambulance and first aid volunteers every year.”
