Speed up the vaccine roll out – says Cllr Moloney

Not enough is being done to speed up the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines according to Cllr Marie Moloney who will raise the issue at this Monday’s Ordinary Meeting of Kerry County Council.

She believes that nursing home staff are more than qualified to administer the vaccines. By allowing nursing home staff to administer the vaccine it could both speed up the operation in such homes and free up HSE staff and allow them work in other areas of society.

During the meeting she plans to ask Kerry County Council to write to the Minister for Health Mr Stephen Donnelly.

"In light of the extremely high number of COVID-19 cases and in order to speed up the rollout of the vaccine, I am asking that a letter be sent to the Minister for Health and to the HSE to allow the highly qualified staff in nursing homes and long stay residential facilities, to administer the vaccine to the residents and staff. They are more than capable of administering same and ensuring that the required paperwork is done,” she said.

Street spectacle to end summer in style

The town centre is set to play host to a vibrant street spectacle this weekend as West Kerry performance group MOTHÚ returns to mark the end of the summer season.

Taking place on Saturday, August 22, the free outdoor event will feature giant puppets, fire dancers, musicians, and lantern displays, bringing music, magic, and theatrical performance directly to the heart of the town.

The production, titled The Seeker or An Cuardaitheoir, draws inspiration from the writings of renowned 20th-century Irish language poet Seán Ó Ríordáin.

The performance explores themes of the soul, isolation, and rebirth, bringing the poet’s work to life through large-scale creative arts.

MOTHÚ is well known to local audiences following previous acclaimed street performances in Killarney, including Peig Mór and Aisling Ghobnait.

The spectacle will begin at Market Cross at 8.45pm, with the performance leading a parade through Main Street before finishing in College Square.
Organisers expect a large turnout for the free family event and recommend that attendees arrive early to secure a good viewing spot along the route.
