Special screening of The Dawn
T
THE acclaimed film The Dawn is being screened as part of the Proclamation Day celebrations in Cinema Killarney today at 3pm.
Filmed around Killarney and its surrounds in 1933, The Dawn became the first full-length indigenous Irish sound feature film.
Made with an amateur cast of 250 locals, its plot is set around the War of Independence.
Produced, directed and scripted by Tom Cooper, a Killarney garage and cinema owner, The Dawn was first shown in Dublin cinemas in 1936.
Hugely popular and critically acclaimed, it also played to packed houses in the UK, New York and Boston.
The Cooper family still own the cinema begun by their famous ancestor.
