Spa clubhouse packed for book launch

Spa GAA’s clubhouse was packed to the rafters on Friday night last (December 2) when the club had the honour of hosting the launch of Donie O'Sullivan's new book.

“A Footballer, Once’ was written by Donie O'Sullivan and Jimmy O'Sullivan Darcy and was published by Hero Books.

There was a great turnout from the local community and GAA members from far and near on the night.

MC Ger Galvin welcomed everyone and speakers on the night were Spa Chairman Michael Cronin, Guest of Honour Michael Gleeson, Liam Hayes of Hero Books  Donie O'Sullivan, and finished with a song from Sean Ó Sé.

The book is on sale on Amazon, where it is available as an eBook, paperback and hardback.

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) has issued a warm weather warning for anyone climbing in the region after being called to assist a walker on Sunday.

The rescue team was tasked to the Devil’s Ladder area of Carrauntoohil (Corrán Tuathail) to help a climber experiencing severe exhaustion and dehydration. Volunteers successfully assisted the walker down to an awaiting vehicle.
With the current heatwave continuing, KMRT is reminding all hillwalkers to prepare adequately before setting out.
The team recommends carrying at least one extra litre of water, wearing sunscreen, and using a peaked or wide-brimmed hat. Walkers should set out early in the morning to ensure they are off the mountains before the peak heat builds in the middle of the day.
KMRT also advises walkers to consider changing their plans to less strenuous routes or rescheduling their climbs entirely until temperatures drop.

The Fossa Climate Action Group will host its annual Summer Guided Walk in the Kerry Biosphere Reserve on Saturday July 18.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10:30am and will be led by staff from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
Diarmaid Griffin of the Fossa Climate Action Group said that the recent sunny weather has energised the local environment, making it an ideal time to observe local wildlife in abundance.
“In Killarney, we are fortunate to live within an UNESCO Biosphere, which is a specially designated area of natural and cultural heritage with worldwide renown,” Griffin said.
He added that there are only 784 Biospheres globally, with just two located in Ireland.
Following a review in 2017, the Kerry Biosphere Reserve was expanded beyond Killarney National Park. It now extends west to Lough Acoose to include the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, north to Fossa and Kilcummin, and east to the Paps mountains.
Griffin encouraged the public to participate to experience the health benefits of spending time outdoors. “Study after study proves that connection with nature boosts your immunity, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves sleep,” he said.
