Seán Kelly withdraws from presidential race
Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly has withdrawn from the presidential election.
He confirmed the news in a statement this afternoon.
The Kilcummin native had declared his interest in seeking the Fine Gael nomination two weeks ago, despite previously ruling himself out of the race in July.
Mr Kelly said while he is of the view that a contest would be “good and healthy” for the party, he acknowledged that he is unlikely to gather the required 20 nominations from the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party to contest the election.
He said he was “humbled” by the support for his candidacy at grassroots level, and expressed his gratitude to his supporters and colleagues for the support he has received in recent weeks.
Mr Kelly will now return to Brussels to continue his work as MEP for Ireland South.
Nominations for the Fine Gael presidential candidacy close tomorrow, September 2.
A candidate needs the backing of 20 members of the Parliamentary Party, 25 Fine Gael Councillors and five members of the Executive Council to be nominated.
Heather Humphreys is the Fine Gael candidate who looks likely to secure much of the Fine Gael support.
