A local priest is this week appealing to the public to avoid parking on church grounds for prolonged periods.

Fr Kieran O’Brien this week issued a statement asking the public not to park for prolonged periods and to be mindful of those needing parking spaces at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Recently, he said, there has been an increase in the number of cars parked on the Cathedral grounds and avenue.

“On weekdays cars are being parked for prolonged periods with many parking for the full working day,” he said.

“This means that families are unable to get parking when they come to the Cathedral for Mass, funerals, weddings and other liturgical ceremonies. We ask the public for their help with this and remind them that the nearby car park continues to be available for parking.”

He added, that the parking spaces around the Cathedral Sacristy door be used only by those accessing the Cathedral with limited mobility and in need of the wheelchair ramp.

“We also ask that parking on the grounds of the Cathedral at weekend Mass times only be used by those with limited mobility. Thank you for your understanding and help with this.”
