‘Pop Up Gaeltacht’ growing in popularity

Killarney’s first ‘Pop Up Gaeltacht’ of 2024 drew its largest crowd since its foundation less than one year ago.
Last Friday night, Courtneys pub on Plunkett St, was packed to rafters as more and more people come together for the regular Irish language sessions.
A mix of young and old came including TikTok star Séaghan Ó Súilleabháin who is known by his social media name ‘The Kerry Cowboy” attended and he gave a rousing rendition of ’An Poc ar Buile’.
“What started as a group of us who had been friends in the Sem wanting to speak Irish together has snowballed into a vibrant celebration of the language. We now have people of all ages and backgrounds coming back each night, with native speakers from the Gaeltacht rubbing shoulders with learners,” said one of the founders and organisers, James Knoblauch.
“More than anything, the ‘Pop Up’ has shown that the Irish language is alive in Killarney and that there is somewhere for the Irish speaking community to come together. ‘The Pop Up Gaeltacht’ is looking forward to celebrating a year of success in March when it holds its seventh ‘Pop Up’ 12 months on from the initial event.”
