In the modern digital age, speed often trumps accuracy on social media.
We live in an era where anyone with a smartphone can publish a headline, and anyone with a keyboard can render a verdict. But as recent events in our town have shown, trial by social media is a dangerous path that damages lives before the truth even has a chance to surface.
On Sunday night, September 13, a serious incident occurred at Minish, Killarney, shortly before 10pm. Gardaí were called to the scene. For the motorists involved, it was undoubtedly a frightening and unsettling experience.
Within a short time, however, posts began appearing across local social media channels. Before long, these posts provoked a wave of speculation, commentary, and condemnation from individuals who had no idea what was actually taking place. The original posts have since been deleted, but the online commentary had already done its work.
What the commentators online did not know, and what they made no attempt to check, was the full reality behind the headlines. As a trusted news source, the Killarney Advertiser carries out strict cross-checks with official channels before printing any report. Through those checks, we established that this incident involved a vulnerable individual. The person was taken to safety by Gardaí and assessed by medical professionals. No injuries occurred, and no offences were committed.
This is precisely why care and restraint are essential. Traditional news outlets like the Killarney Advertiser verify facts, speak to authorities, and protect vulnerable people before publishing. Social media algorithms, by contrast, thrive on outrage, reaction, and snap judgments.
A brand-new theatrical production has been added to the Christmas in Killarney festival line-up, bringing a major family attraction to the town throughout the winter season.
Titled Christmas in Killarney – The Show, the new production makes its debut at Killarney Racecourse. It runs every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday across the four weekends leading up to Christmas, offering a fresh entertainment experience alongside the town’s existing seasonal celebrations.
The narrative follows a story based locally, beginning when Santa’s sleigh crash-lands in Killarney during a routine test flight. With Santa missing, a search-and-rescue team of North Pole elves and their loyal reindeer Olive embark on a race against time to locate him before Christmas Eve. The journey takes the characters through recognisable local locations, including the streets of the town and Killarney National Park.
The stage production combines live acting, music, and comedy designed for audiences of all ages. The storyline concludes directly in time for the cast to join the weekly Magic Parade in the town centre each Saturday.
The addition expands the six-week festival schedule, which is managed by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and supported by Kerry County Council. The new show runs alongside returning attractions, including the weekly parades, Christmas markets, and seasonal dining events across local venues.
Organisers confirmed that tickets for Christmas in Killarney – The Show are available via the Killarney Racecourse website, with multiple showtimes scheduled across each weekend of the run.
