New playground signage will promote inclusion for all

By Sean Moriarty
Kerry County Council is to install special communication boards in playgrounds around the county to promote inclusion and better communication between non-verbal children and families.
The Council has worked with national charity ‘Finding Charlie's Voice’ which helps raise awareness around verbal dyspraxia and supports families of children that have been diagnosed with the condition.
Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Marie Moloney, raised the issue at Monday’s Kerry County Council meeting.
She was informed at the meeting that the Council has secured funding from the Healthy Ireland Fund, and that the final communication board design has been completed.
The signs are currently being manufactured with rollout to all 41 public playgrounds in Kerry by the end of the year.
“I very much welcome the answer received as this is a vital way of non-verbal children communicating on what they want to do in the playgrounds,” Cllr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser.
“It is incumbent of us to do whatever we can to make life easier for children with disabilities and for their parents. Sometimes when we table motions they have to be referred to the Minister and the Department but this is something we as a Council can do for ourselves and I am delighted that Kerry County Council has stepped up to the mark and were forthcoming in providing these communication boards.”
