New Minor Injury Unit confirmed to open by 2027

HSE allocates budget and appoints design team with site construction scheduled to begin later this year

The HSE has confirmed that Killarney's new Minor Injury Unit on the former St Columbanus Home grounds will be fully operational by 2027, with site construction set to commence later this year.
The update details the budget allocations, construction timeline, and operational framework for the facility. The news was released in a detailed response to Killarney councillor Marie Moloney at the Regional Health Forum South West meeting in Cork City.
Councillor Moloney queried the timeline following recent site developments.
"Now that the transfer of residents/patients to the new Community Nursing Unit has begun, can we be advised when it is likely that the Minor Injuries Clinic will be up and running," Councillor Moloney asked.
Responding on behalf of the HSE, Kerry Integrated Healthcare Area Manager Julie O’Neill confirmed that a design team has been appointed and project initiation is complete.
"Project Initiation has been completed and a budget allocated in line with the HSE Capital Projects and Procurement processes, with a Design Team now appointed. The next phase will involve the commencement of the necessary regulatory, technical and planning approval processes required to progress the project to start construction onsite later this year, with an anticipated completion date in 2027," O'Neill stated.
The unit will operate under the HSE Emergency Medicine Programme to treat non-life-threatening and non-limb-threatening injuries that do not require hospital admission.
Until the Killarney unit opens, minor injuries in Kerry continue to be managed primarily through the Advanced Nurse Practitioner stream at University Hospital Kerry’s Emergency Department, which operates daily from 9.00am to 9.00pm. Future expansions of minor injury services across the region will be guided by the HSE Strategic Framework for Population Based Planning.
