New Mayor of Killarney to be announced on Friday
Cllr Marie Moloney expected to be named as new Mayor of Killarney on Friday afternoon.
The Annual General Meeting of the Killarney Municipal District is due to take place at Killarney House on Friday afternoon.
The meeting is open to the public, the first such public meeting in over a year and the first municipal district meeting to take place physically and not online since last November.
The only items on the agenda are the election of Mayor/Cathaoirleach and the election of Deputy Mayor/Leas Cathaoirleach for the Killarney Municipal District.
Following an agreement between candidates ahead of the 2019 Local Authority elections, it was decided that senior positions would be done on an annual rotation.
However, the appointment is still subject to a vote but Cllr Moloney is expected to take over from Cllr Brendan Cronin.
“I would like to take the of Mayor and Cathaoirleach role out further, it is Mayor for the entire Municipal District and not just the town of Killarney so I would like visit places like Sliabh Luachra and Gneeveguilla,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I would also like to visit the schools and explain the role and local politics to students. Who knows, I might encourage some of them to take an interest in politics,”
The incoming Mayor and Deputy Mayor will serve for one year.
